SOLAR ECLIPSE: OBSERVATION POINT
Free admission. The solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August will be visible from the site located on the Anillo Exterior in Condado de Alhama de Murcia, which has been set up to allow the public to enjoy a phenomenon that will reach an obscuration of nearly 98 per cent in the Region of Murcia.
The site will open to the public at 6.00 pm, whilst the educational activities will begin at 6.30 pm. Civil Protection staff will be on hand to assist attendees and will hand out free, approved solar eclipse glasses on a first-come, first-served basis, whilst stocks last.
The event will feature Juan José López Pascual, a resident of Alhama, a biologist who trained at the University of Murcia (UMU) and holds a Master’s degree in Astrobiology, who will provide a live commentary on the Moon’s progress across the Sun’s disc and the main characteristics of this astronomical event.
The Town Council will also provide a car park near the venue. Signage will be in place to help visitors find their way and manage traffic flow. Given the expected turnout, the organisers recommend arriving early.
To view the phenomenon, it is essential to wear only approved solar protection glasses. Ordinary sunglasses do not offer sufficient protection for looking directly at the Sun.
It is also advisable to bring water, wear a cap or hat, wear light clothing and apply high-factor sun cream, as the activity will take place in the late afternoon.
